This is the first time ever in world cup history that we have all four Asian cricket teams playing in the knock outs. And the first quarter final match includes one of the most strongest Asian teams - Sri Lanka. Runners up in last two world cups and current T20 champions, Sri Lanka will post a daunting task for South Africa to beat them and go through.
Although South Africa is always christened as the most powerful team, they have a very bad record of knock outs. In fact they have never won any knock out match in world cups. Will they come up good against a team like Sri Lanka that does better in knock outs is a big question.
South Africa finished second in Pool B under India. Their two losses came against Asian teams India and Pakistan whereas they won rest of the matches. Sri Lanka finished third in Pool B under New Zealand and Australia. They lost to New Zealand and Australia and won rest of the matches.
Kumar Sangakkara is at the peak of his form before he would probably bid farewell to cricket. He is the highest run getter so far in ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. He also became the first ever cricketer to score four ODI consecutive centuries.
AB de Villiers as usual provides treat for every cricket fan with his innovative shots. He is also one of the top run getters with highest number of sixes as well. If he gets going he is absolutely unstoppable. He can disturb the best bowling line ups of world cricket with his adjustments on the crease while the bowler is still busy with his action. At times it seems he is batting on a shaky ground where he is not stable on the crease even before the bowler has bowled. And somehow he balances himself and hits the ball all over the park. He is an absolute treat to watch.
Sydney cricket ground will offer more help to the batsmen so we can see a flurry of runs. At the same time one can expect a lot of resistance from some quality bowlers like Mathews, Malinga, Steyn, Morkel and many more to name.
Head to Head, Sri Lanka has won 29 matches and lost 28 ODIs to South Africa. So a very close stats here. Will South Africa make it even stevens or will Sri Lanka increase the tally in their favour with one more win? Let us wait and watch when these heavyweights clash at SCG for the 1st quarter finals of 2015 cricket world cup.
