One sided test matches or those that end in a draw might be boring for cricket fans. But what about a test match where a team dominates almost the whole match and losses it in the fourth innings? Such was the nature of 1st test match between Sri Lanka and India that was played at Galle.
It has always been difficult to chase even small targets in fourth innings at Galle. And most of the times stats speak the truth. While fans expected India to chase that small total, the history continued to prove its worth. A lot of credit goes to Sri Lankan bowlers who held their nerves till the end. They made Indian batsmen life tougher by building a lot of pressure. They made a small target look like a 350 plus chase.
Virat Kohli who is well known for his positive intent in test cricket lacked the focus. Chandimal turned tables on India by batting positively. That changed the whole course of the match. Indians could have followed the same strategy when they lost top three wickets. When asked about any issue with five special bowlers Virat was pretty clear about his strategy. He said he expected more from the batsmen after bowlers did a decent job overall in the first test.
India vs Sri Lanka 2nd test match will be held at P. Saravanamuttu Stadium in Colombo. Also known as P Sara Oval and Colombo Oval, this stadium hosted its first test match in 1982. Sri Lanka faced England where the visitors won it by seven wickets. The last test match played here was in June 2015 between Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The scorecard of this test match looked very similar to the Galle test between India and Sri Lanka.
Notably Sri Lanka registered their first ever test win on this ground and that too against India. This happened in 1985. After regulary matches till mid 90s, this ground saw a drought of International matches till recent past. It is good to see return on International cricket to this relatively less known stadium that carries along a good history with it.
Will Indian team think of some changes in their strategy is a question? We believe Kohli will continue the same strategy of playing five specialist bowlers. And if he feels he should change the playing XI, he might target Rohit Sharma or Harbhajan Singh who weren't impressive in the first test match.
Sri Lankan team will have a clear target and that would certainly be to go up 2-0 in this series. That would also be a fitting farewell for Kumar Sangakkara who plays his last test match at P Sara Oval.
See you guys with a hope that we can see another high quality cricket match.
