Talking about the double header today - one match holds utmost importance to decide the course of this tournament, while the other match holds no importance in terms of taking a berth in the semis. India vs Australia match will decide which of these two teams will reach semi finals, while West Indies would play Afghanistan as a formality.
India vs Australia matches have earned a lot more significance since the inception of the Border Gavaskar trophy. Due to political tensions, India vs Pakistan matches are scarce now and diminishing in terms of popularity. What more can you expect when we are at a situation where we are witnessing a virtual quarter final today between India and Australia. Whichever team wins, advances to the semi finals and the other flies back home.
India was expected to play all guns blazing before the tournament started. To be honest, the team hasn't performed to its optimum yet. A big loss against New Zealand was followed by a narrow win over Pakistan. The match against Bangladesh was almost lost but fortunes turned towards India in the last few balls. Yes, full credit goes to the team that held their nerves till the end and converted a loss into a win. But still we haven't seen some hard hitting efforts or big scores from the team (which was always expected to be the case). If India has to win today and next two matches to lift the trophy, they have to pull up their socks and register 'comprehensive' and 'morale boosting' wins.
Australia also started off their campaign in a similar fashion. They faced a defeat against New Zealand. The only difference was they lost with a smaller margin and hence they preserved a better net run rate than India till now. Then they defeated Pakistan and Bangladesh. Even their wins weren't as comprehensive as expected. But their top order seemed to be a bit better than Indian batting line up. For India, the low scores from Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan so far has been a big concern. Bowlers have done a great job but batsmen have to show some more resistance and character.
This could be the last match of Shane Watson if Australia losses today. He has already declared his retirement from International cricket and T20 world cup 2016 would be his last International venture as a player.
West Indies have played like champions so far. They have nailed victories in all three matches. Even on a slow and turning track like Nagpur, they managed to show some patience while batting and ultimately clinched a win in last over. The players are performing with a lot of courage. The combinations of batting and bowling are working well for the team so far. West Indies may win today against Afghanistan, top the Group and play either India or Australia in the semi-finals.
Afghanistan is one of the better doing associate members and their efforts in last few years are worth appreciating. They have a long way to go but they seem to be on the right path of progress. One or two big wins here or there would boost their morale to become a bigger and better team in future.
